In the first stages of the Festival stars like Celisse, Brittney Spencer, John Mellencamp, Plant and Krauss lined up with legendary Willie Nelson and Bob Dylan to make this year’s festival memorable for all country music lovers. This Southern Avenue five-piece blues and soul blues band brings a unique mix of gospel-tinged R&B vocals to make your musical evening very special.

The Birth of Southern Avenue

The band’s name ‘Southern Avenue’ pays homage to a street in Memphis—a thoroughfare stretching from the city limits to the iconic “Soulsville”. The exciting Southern Avenue is a five-piece blues and soul blues band from Memphis, Tennessee, with the name which is a fitting moniker for a group that embodies the soulful essence of Memphis music.

The Southern Avenue band formed in 2015 and quickly became popular, described as “the most talked-about band in Memphis”, by Rock 103. Southern Avenue reached the finals of the International Blues Challenge in 2016. The band is innovative in their approach and their sound defies boundaries, mixing blues, soul and gospel.

The Journey to Stardom

The band’s eventual leader, Ori Naftaly, originally from Israel, relocated to Memphis in 2013. His participation in the International Blues Challenge competition led him to stay permanently in the birthplace of blues where he met Tierinii Jackson, a Memphis native with a powerful voice, and her drumming sister, Tikyra. These three young sensational come together to form the core of Southern Avenue.

Less than a year after their band formation, they signed with Stax Records—the first Memphis band to do so in over 40 years.

Debut Album and Critical Acclaim

The Southern Avenue self-titled debut album was released in February 2017, showcased their talent and songwriting prowess. Nine of the ten songs were penned by Naftaly and Tierinii Jackson. The album featured guest appearances from Luther Dickinson hails from North Mississippi Allstars and trumpeter Marc Franklin (The Bo-Keys).

The debut album gathered positive reviews. Critics praised their music as a unique mix kind of gospel-tinged R&B vocals and roots/blues-based guitar work. After their debut album, they never looked back and continued their journey captivating audiences with their special performances.

Live Performances and Global Recognition

In June 2017, they performed at an event for Rock and Wrap It Up—an organization fighting poverty.

Moreover, the North Mississippi Allstars invited Southern Avenue to support them on their “Prayer for Peace” tour.
