Early Life and Musical Roots

Church and Culture: Growing up in Baltimore, Spencer found solace in church music where she developed an interest in music singing in church. Singing in the choir, she discovered the intersection of spirituality and culture. “Church, for me, was very cultural. It’s spiritual, but also very cultural. Families like mine, we couldn’t really afford singing lessons or anything like that, so I just sang in the church all the time,” she told in her interview with Baltimore magazine.

Singing in church was an opportunity to embark on a new journey and her African American heritage influenced her music with depth and soul. A friend introduced her to The Chicks (formerly Dixie Chicks), sparking her interest in country music. Besides, Taylor Swift and other genre-blending artists further fueled her passion in country music.

Pursuing her dreams, Spencer packed her bags and headed to Nashville, Tennessee in 2013—the heart of country music. She attended Middle Tennessee State University where Spencer immersed herself in the vibrant music field.

As an overweight Black performer, Spencer faced systemic pressures related to fashion and image. She faced numerous challenges, but she remained empowered and determined to break social barriers and make an everlasting impact in the country music industry.

Twitter Virality: In 2020, a viral Twitter video of her cover of The Highwomen’s “Crowded Table” caught the industry’s attention. Fellow artists praised her talent, leading to the release of her debut EP, “Compassion.” “I just love to sing and write songs. Though there’s really no way I could have ever prepared for the most humbling experience of my life to take place on Twitter,” she told Billboard in her interview.
